Self portrait in charcoal
Please note this is one of the first times I've used charcoal and one of the first portraits I've ever done. It's a steep learning curve...
cool - selfportaits are really hard to start of with when using charcoal - Haven't worked with it for many years - don't be afraid to unlearn using lines - use shades and get down and dirty with your fingers - rubbing -- best thing is to uses an eraser to bring out the white parts more -- just keep working on it and make some more - you will get better in time! - -not bad at all for a first time! TIP: take a photo of your art outside - better, even light!
Hey, thanks for the advice and tips, very much appreciated! I know what you mean about 'unlearning lines'. We had to start off with mid tone and rub out highlights / darken areas on this project, Very scary for someone who has only used lines (and pencil) so far!
You are welcome - I know what it is like -- I have been there myself Yeah - we all have our ways - and need to be flexible to try out new ones -- also, try sketching with a brush - and for something new - instead of ink or paint - use some coffee and add a bit of water -- it makes for a cool medium to work with! -- (plus it smells nice - if you like coffee - lol)
I think that's what this paper is about, making us experiment and broaden our 'comfort zone' which has been a lot of fun so far. The coffee thing sounds good, I'll give it a try one day soon, maybe I'll use it in the graphic novel! Thanks again for the advice and comments!
Now it's time for August 2008 Visual Art Features, many new art to discover!
Don't forget that many artists need to be viewed, they deserve it! Fave Fave Fave! My main purpose in doing a monthly feature about (to my point of view) 'the best visual art' is to put in the same level as well wellknown artists and popular creations as unknown artists and under-exposed creations. Artists need to be supported. So don't be shy!
Here's the Menu per Category :
Digital Paintings & Drawings | Mixed Media | PhotoManipulations | 3-Dimensional | Vector & Vexels | Photography | Traditional Paintings & Drawings | Artisan Crafts
