Austin Allegro Coupe

Description

A sort of commission for one :iconkaim46:, who requested my take on the Austin Allegro, and how it might have come from factory as a Coupe.

Tried to keep it old school with the canson technique, and kept the Allegro touches like the C pillar vents and roof line, but added a new front, a more raked rear and also some subtle striping and spoilers for the GT look :D

Thanks tantrum-design

I like the way the front-end up to the B-pillar has turned out, not quite sure of the length vinyl roof and rear-end (looks a bit too modern for the era and was expecting it to retain a bit of overt "Allegro-ness") though I can easily imagine a vinyl-roofed model appearing in the early/mid-70s.

Anyway, here is how I’d imagine things turning out in a What-If scenario for the alternate Allegro.

Since the E-Series engine and bulky heating system from the Marina are not present in this alternate Allegro (thus not affecting the styling like it did with the original), the car ends up being powered by alternate 998/1098-1275cc A-Series (later replaced by more powerful 970-1275cc A-OHC) and 1622-1999cc B-OHC (as a stop-gap with slightly more power than the original OHV B-Series, later being replaced by the related alternate O-Series) engines, while alternate diesel versions are a possibility.

The obvious gap in the engine range between the 1275cc A-Series and 1622cc B-OHC would probably be filled by either a bored out 1340-1375cc A-Series/A-OHC, an enlarged 1400-1500cc 4-cylinder variation of the DX engine from the stillborn Issigonis Mini 9X (that in real-life later spawned a 100 bhp 1275cc 6-cylinder) or 1.4 B-OHC/O-Series units.

The alternate Hot Hatch version of the Allegro would have an output of 112-115 bhp from a 2.0 B-OHC or 2.0 O-Series (with the latter in real-life being capable of a max output of up to 129 bhp without 16 valves or turbos), roughly equivalent to the later real-life MG Maestro 2.0 EFi and enabling it to take the fight to the Golf GTi.
